DVDetour

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Never believe a time frame that comes from my mouth.

Yes, FBBB and Nesca are still being prepped for DVD. The delay’s for a good reason though. I’m playing around with a more sophisticated DVD authoring program that’ll let us do more stuff. For starters, I decided to heed some advice we got earlier and add subtitle tracks to the dubs. Which means the reason I haven’t done FBBB or Nesca yet is because A.) I had to learn how to make a subtitle track and B.) I had to go back and do ReDeath again. But I’m getting the hang of this thing and the next two discs should move a little faster. Won’t even bother guessing a date at this point, you and I both know I’ll miss it anyway.

I think I said this:
“The sword has not intent, merely a will to cut.”

I think I said it, but I’m not sure. Sometimes I remember things by accident without all the ancillary data. But if I did actually say the above, I’d like credit. Not that it matters.

Getting MacBook up and running

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

I’ve been busy yesterday and today getting my MacBook Pro up and running. I had forgotten how many ancillary applications I use on a regular basis.

One big headache was getting universal binaries for my F/OSS tools.
Turns out, darwinports sucks even more than usual during the intel transition. Luckily Fink installed nicely from source (not that I prefer the huge build times).
Eclipse required a hack to the 3.1.1 release to get working.
Apple’s default install doesn’t have X11. Worse, the downloadable builds of the X11 app don’t install over the intel libraries. I had to install from the restore disk, not exactly comfortable with that.
iCal isn’t universal? WTF.

In any case, most things are working alright. It’ll still be a little rough for a while, but this transition looks to be somewhat smooth, albeit not nearly as smooth as Steve Jobs would have us believe.
